John and Jackie Kennedy

The Kennedys transmitted a magical image of a happy family, as evidenced by the family photo above taken on September 30, 1963. As usual, Jack and Jackie are staring at the cameras, not at each other. (John F. Kennedy Library)

Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson

The Johnsons appeared to be an ideal First Couple -- cooperative, experienced, loving. But his grand dreams of a Great Society, and her influential role as his adviser and the champion of beautification, faded amid the controversy and pain of urban riots, the Vietnam war, and student rebellion. Rather than serving as a model for future co-presidents, the Johnson experience served notice that, even in an age of rising feminism, First Ladies could be only as successful as their husbands.
