Introduction

Every summer since 1989, the Université de Montréal has sent a group of students to Nankai University, in Tianjin, to participate in an intensive summer course of Chinese language studies. In 1995, McGill University joined up with U of M and sent a joint group to Nankai. This program has given students the opportunity to accelerate their acquisition of the Chinese language, while familiarizing themselves with contemporary Chinese society and culture. Not only does Nankai University enjoy an international reputation for research in various fields, but it counts among the first Chinese universities to offer a language program for foreign students.
